As a boater, the ability to communicate is essential, especially if you’re out on an extended cruise. Traditional cell reception can be unreliable in remote areas, but with satellite communication devices you can ensure constant connectivity. With a variety of device options, it's now easier and more affordable than ever for boaters to stay in touch. We’ve compiled a list below of some of the best satellite communication options available to enhance your boating experience.
The inReach lineup from Garmin offers two robust solutions for off-grid communication: the inReach Mini 2 and the inReach Messenger.
The inReach Mini 2: This compact, handheld device comes with a small screen and connects to your smartphone via bluetooth to provide global satellite coverage, enabling you to text, or send SOS messages from any location, regardless of cell coverage.
The inReach Messenger: While sharing the same satellite capabilities as the Mini 2, the Messenger features a smaller screen and longer battery life which is great for extended trips. Additionally, the Messenger also has reverse charging capabilities.
Both devices pair with your smartphone via the Garmin Messenger app, allowing for easy texting and SOS communication. MSRP for the inReach Mini 2 come in at $399 (marine bundle for $449) and the Messenger for $299. Monthly service plans start at $14.95.
Spot specializes in GPS text communication, offering devices tailored for adventurers such as the Spot X, Spot Gen4, and Spot Trace. The former two are GPS messaging devices, while the latter is a simple tracker. The flagship Spot X is a stand-alone messaging device with a built-in keyboard and screen, allowing you to communicate without pairing with a smartphone. The smaller Spot Gen4 pairs with the Spot X app to grant your smartphone satellite coverage, making it a flexible and affordable option for staying connected.
Spot stands out with its Global Overwatch & Rescue plan, offering 24/7 medical and security assistance through a partnership with FocusPoint International. Spot devices are priced between $150 and $250, with monthly plans starting at $11.95. For an additional $40 per year, you can access the comprehensive Global Overwatch & Rescue plan.
Starlink brings high-speed internet to marine applications, providing a browsing experience comparable to home broadband. Although this solution can be more costly, it offers unparalleled coverage and connectivity options. With onboard WiFi, you can use various communication methods, including iMessage, WiFi calling, and email. We’ll dive deeper into internet options in a separate post.
While previous satellite communication solutions may still be preferred for their rugged, standalone capabilities, Apple has been enhancing satellite connectivity for iPhones since the release of the iPhone 14. With the latest iOS 18 update, iPhone 14 and newer models will gain the ability to exchange iMessages via satellite. Previously, satellite communications were restricted to emergency services only. This update allows you to text friends and family as usual, even in areas without cellular reception. Currently, Apple’s satellite communications functionality does not incur a monthly cost.
With Garmin and Spot's offering satellite communication devices, and iPhones expanding capabilities, staying connected with family and friends while on the water is easier than ever. Explore these options further to find the best fit for your needs at the links below.
